A report by BBC News states that over 9 million people have been affected by “super” Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda that struck the islands of the Philippines over the weekend. Estimates are that over 10,000 people have died and most of the survivors are struggling to survive due to a lack of food and shelter, with a tropical depression bringing more rain to the ravaged area later this week. In response, OCUCF has launched our CanHelp program to collect donations which will be directed to relief efforts. Tax receipts will be issued for personal donations of $10.00 or greater. Donations can be made at participating credit union branches or through our secure online payment portal here.
The federal government has already pledged $5 million dollars in relief dollars and will also match dollar for dollar any personal donations made. OCUCF will be directing donations to the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF) who is one of our international partners already providing support to credit union and co-operative initiatives in the region.
